bringing Christ-centered hope and wholeness to orphan care
GNCS is overflowing!
October 11, 2016
A month ago we were overwhelmed by the number of children knocking at our gate to be enrolled in school. It was evidence of a country that is struggling and families that need help each year more than before. By the time school started 100 children were showing up with 50 more enrolled.
Opportunity: The chance to change the future destination of 150 children-both on earth and hopefully in heaven.
Problem: 150 children and only 7 sponsors. 143 children attending or wanting to attend who don't have anyone to pay their way through. That creates an even bigger problem when teachers can't be paid and supplies bought.
Fast forward to today, October 10th. One week ago Hurricane Matthew rolled through annihilating coastal towns and mountain villages alike. Homes were flattened, crops destroyed, and livestock lost. 1000 people believed dead and the number is still climbing. What is a destitute homeless family to do? Send their children to relatives or friends in and around Port where the Hurricane did not cause as much damage.
But how does that effect us at Good Neighbor Christian School? New children are knocking on our gate everyday hoping to be able to enroll and go to school. Now the local families are stretched even thinner with more mouths to feed and paying for their education just isn't feasible.
We have 5 small classrooms, and I mean small! The children are packed onto benches and some are standing. John was busy building benches this afternoon and evening to try to squeeze more children into the classrooms.
Opportunity: Even more children waiting to learn academics AND learn of Jesus.
Problem: Sooo many children wanting to come to school. We have no idea how many children will continue to pour through our gate in the coming days and weeks as Haiti resumes a new normal.
Solution: Two hundred of our friends coming alongside a destitute child and saying, "I believe in you and I want you to learn and know Jesus. I will pay your schooling for you." Thank you. We'll be down here putting up additional classrooms, building benches, and hiring teachers.
You know what would be such a blessing to these kids and families right now? If we could feed them lunch. We used to but there is just so many now and we can't feed them for free. If these kiddos are fully sponsored we can put up more classrooms, build benches, hire more teachers, and fill little starved bellies and minds.
Let's bless these little ones and their families. Let's make it a little bit easier for children to stay in families. Let's be known as people who love until it hurts and then keep on loving.
